Cherry Red unearth Hawkwind classic – ‘lost’ 1975 album leads a raft of new catalogue deals

March 1st 2013: Cherry Red have today announced an extensive series of new catalogue deals that will see the UK independent reissue a number of key titles, including the much sought-after ‘lost’ Hawkwind album Warrior On The Edge Of Time, in addition to releases  from the legendary Salsoul label, QEDG Management, Johnny Guitar Watson and Moonska.Originally released in 1975 on United Artists, Warrior On The Edge Of Time was Hawkwind’s fifth studio album, and their last to feature Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister before the bassist departed to form Motorhead.Reaching number 13 in the UK charts, the album’s master tapes were initially rumoured to be lost or destroyed. They were in fact secure in the United Artists archive at EMI and, under the sanction of Hawkwind’s surviving members, this is the first time the album has been officially re-mastered.Scheduled for a May release on Cherry Red’s Atomhenge imprint, which is managed by Esoteric Recordings, the album will be available in single disc and expanded editions – the latter featuring a 5.1 Surround Sound mix drawn from the original multi-track master tapes.Speaking about the project, Adam Velasco, Managing Director at Cherry Red Records said: “The reissue of such a sought-after album epitomises the Cherry Red way of business. Even in the digital era, there are still buried treasures out there from iconic artists like Hawkwind, as well as strong demand from fans. It is our job to locate these albums, licence them and release them with the appropriate love and attention. We have many more exciting projects planned for 2013.”In addition to Hawkwind, Cherry Red have entered into a physical deal for the Salsoul Label with Altra Moda Music - incorporating future releases from the likes of Loleatta Holloway, Jocelyn Brown, First Choice, Salsoul Orchestra, Skyy, Double Exposure, Instant Funk and Joe Bataan – as well as a European-wide agreement with Virjon to release the extensive Johnny Guitar Watson and The Watsonian Institute’s DJM catalogue. This current raft of catalogue deals is completed by an agreement with QEDG Management (Uriah Heep, Greg Lake, Curved Air and Landmarq) and Cherry Red’s purchase of rights to the Moonska label, which includes studio albums by Bad Manners, The Selecter, The Skatalites and Special Beat.Celebrating their 35th anniversary in 2013, Cherry Red remains a leading force in the catalogue market, profitably releasing more than 500 physical titles each year across 20 bespoke imprints. The company’s recently-unveiled Top 51 sellers for Q4 2012 included highly-placed reissues from Sam Fox, Hotlegs, Marc & The Mambas and Bill Fay.The full Cherry Red Q4 Top 51 can be found here.ENDSAbout Cherry Red:Cherry Red is a UK independent record label, founded by Iain McNay in 1978.
