Merlin Statement on iCloud Announcement

In response to some media speculation that independent labels are being offered a discriminatory licensing rate for the new iCloud service, Charles Caldas, CEO independents’ rights agency Merlin says:“Apple is the most experienced player in the digital music space and has long understood the value of independents to the success of iTunes. We have absolutely no reason to believe that Apple (unlike other services) has either not materially recognised the integral value of independents to their new service or does not plan to pay them fairly and equitably.”Merlin is unable to comment on any aspect of the negotiations, which given Apple’s position running the world’s longest-standing digital music service, with existing direct deals with the vast majority of the world’s independent record labels, are a direct matter between Apple and its licensees.
