What made you want to work in music?
I can remember the records my dad used to play in the house were always of huge interest to me, and some of my earliest memories are soundtracked by the likes of Crosby, Stills and Nash, Blind Faith and Led Zeppelin. I left my small town to study, and became heavily involved with the music journalism circuit across Edinburgh and Glasgow. From then, I knew I’d never be able to distance myself from music. Unfortunately, my practical musical skills extend about as far as the tambourine!
What’s your favourite album of all time?
I’ll always gravitate back to Burial’s Untrue, which had a profound impact on first listen. I’ve definitely got nothing new to say about it, but it’s such a distinctive album. It toys between its inspirations in dubstep, drum & bass and garage, whilst still maintaining this haunting broodiness throughout. Otherwise, contenders also include Nas’ Illmatic, CAN’s Future Days and the soundtrack to The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift.
What’s one piece of tech you couldn’t live without?
For me Shazam was a game changer, I think outside of the usual suspects, it’s the app I use the most. I’ve got absolutely no shame in Shazam-ing in any setting, and I’ve been able to ID some of the songs I’ll be taking to the grave by using it!
